스튜디오는 편안해지기 쉽습니다. 어두운 방에서 오래 화면을 보는 일이라 그렇습니다. 그런데 편안함이 오래되면 작업실과 대기실의 경계가 흐려지고, 공간 전체가 한 가지 온도로 가라앉습니다.

서울 강남구에 자리한 C.I.C는 148㎡ 규모의 색보정 스튜디오입니다. 2007년 완공했습니다. 이 프로젝트의 과제는 정체된 분위기를 바꾸는 것이었습니다. 편안한 스튜디오 분위기에 젖어 작업실과 대기실의 경계가 사라진 상태였습니다.

우리는 갤러리의 공기를 가져오기로 했습니다. 갤러리는 머무는 곳이지만 늘어지지 않는 곳입니다. 천장에 레일 조명을 걸고 벽에 그림을 걸었습니다. 벽 한 면에는 가로로 긴 개구부를 내어 물건을 진열했습니다. 같은 라운지라도 갤러리의 규칙이 걸리면 앉는 자세가 달라집니다.

바닥은 원목 플로링으로 깔았습니다. 벽은 스페셜 도장으로 마감해 빛이 닿는 각도마다 결이 다르게 읽히도록 했습니다. 리셉션 카운터는 검게 마감한 단일 볼륨으로 세워 바닥과 벽의 밝기 사이에서 기준점이 되게 했습니다.

작업실로 들어가는 벽과 문은 열연강판으로 짰습니다. 이 공간에서 가장 무거운 재료입니다. 나무 바닥과 도장 벽이 이어지다가 강판 앞에서 멈춥니다. 문을 여는 동작에 무게가 실리고, 그 무게가 작업실과 대기실을 나눕니다. 벽을 더 세우는 대신 재료로 경계를 만든 것입니다.

공기가 달라지면 사람이 달라집니다. 이 프로젝트에 새긴 것은 그 순서였습니다.

C.I.C is a 148 sqm colour grading studio in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in 2007. The brief was to change a stagnant atmosphere: comfort had blurred the line between the working rooms and the waiting area until the whole floor settled into a single temperature. The studio borrowed the air of a gallery, a place where people stay without slackening. Track lighting was hung from the ceiling, pictures were placed on the walls, and a long horizontal aperture was cut into one wall for display. Oak flooring runs throughout, the walls carry a special paint finish that reads differently at each angle of light, and reception is a single dark volume set between the two. The wall and door into the working rooms are built from hot-rolled steel, the heaviest material in the room: timber and paint run on until they stop at the steel, and the weight of opening that door is what separates work from waiting.
