덮밥은 누구나 아는 음식입니다. 이 가게는 거기에 다른 재료를 얹어 낯설게 만듭니다. 우리는 그 방식을 그대로 공간으로 옮기기로 했습니다.

서울 송파구에 자리한 Aurora Dubbab은 66㎡ 규모의 퓨전 덮밥집입니다. 2019년 1월 완공했습니다. 올드 앤 뉴라는 방향에서 우리의 역할은 새 재료를 찾는 것이 아니라 오래된 재료를 다시 배열하는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 육각 무늬가 섞인 옛 시멘트 타일을 바닥에 깔고, 천장은 목재로 격자를 짜 패널을 끼웠습니다. 벽 한쪽에는 노란 벽돌을 쌓고 화장실에는 금박 액자 거울을 걸었습니다. 하나씩 떼어 놓고 보면 예전 가게에서 흔히 보던 것들인데, 한자리에 모으고 색을 바꾸면 처음 보는 조합이 됩니다.

벽은 연한 연둣빛으로 칠했습니다. 칠한 자국이 남을 만큼 거칠게 마감해 갓 칠한 면처럼 보이지 않게 했고, 그 위에 마티스 포스터를 액자에 넣어 걸었습니다. 조명은 주황색 도기 펜던트를 낮게 내렸습니다. 식당에서 색을 정하는 것은 대개 음식인데, 여기서는 벽과 조명이 먼저 색을 갖고 음식이 그 안에 놓입니다.

입구는 문 하나로 정리했습니다. 짙은 청회색 벽돌 파사드에 주황색 문 하나만 세우고, 문짝에는 둥근 유리 구멍 네 개를 세로로 뚫었습니다. 옛 식당 문에 있던 둥근 창을 크기와 개수만 바꿔 옮긴 것입니다. 밤이 되면 골목에서 이 문만 밝고, 구멍 너머로 안쪽 사람의 움직임이 조각으로 보입니다. 간판을 크게 다는 대신 문 하나로 이 가게를 기억하게 했습니다.

같은 문을 실내에서도 반복했습니다. 안쪽 방으로 넘어가는 자리와 화장실 앞에 같은 주황색 문을 달아, 66㎡ 안에서 이 형태가 여러 번 나타납니다. 반복되는 요소가 하나 있으면 작은 가게도 흩어지지 않고 한 덩어리로 읽힙니다.

좌석은 두 가지로 나눴습니다. 한쪽 벽에는 노란 벤치를 길게 붙이고 짙은 녹색 벽면을 배경으로 두었으며, 가운데에는 붉은 등받이 살 의자와 원목 테이블을 놓아 인원에 따라 붙이고 뗄 수 있게 했습니다. 혼자 빠르게 먹고 나가는 손님과 여럿이 앉아 오래 이야기하는 손님이 같은 시간에 들어오는 가게이기 때문입니다.

A rice bowl is a dish everyone already knows. This shop makes it unfamiliar by adding other ingredients on top. We chose to move that method directly into the space. [Old and New] : adding one thing to what is already known until it turns unfamiliar — not building anew but mixing again. Aurora Dubbab is a 66 sqm fusion rice-bowl restaurant in Songpa-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in January 2019. Under the direction of old and new, we placed our role not in finding new materials but in rearranging old ones. Vintage cement tile with hexagonal patterning was laid on the floor, the ceiling was framed in timber and infilled with panels, one wall was built in yellow brick, and a gilt-framed mirror hung in the washroom. Taken one at a time these are things you used to see in any old shop; gathered in one room and shifted in colour, they become a combination no one has seen before. The walls were painted a pale green, finished roughly enough to keep the marks of application so they would not read as freshly coated, and hung with framed Matisse posters. Orange ceramic pendants were dropped low. In a restaurant the colour is usually set by the food; here the walls and the lighting hold the colour first and the food is placed inside it. The entrance was resolved as a single door: one orange door set into a dark blue-grey brick facade, with four round glass openings cut vertically into the leaf — the porthole of an old restaurant door, moved across with only its size and number changed. At night this is the only bright thing on the street, and the movement of people inside is seen in fragments through the openings. Rather than a large sign, one door is what makes the shop memorable. The same door is repeated indoors, at the opening to the rear room and in front of the washroom, so that the form appears several times within 66 sqm; one repeated element keeps a small shop reading as a single whole rather than as scattered parts. Seating was divided in two: a long yellow bench fixed along one wall against a deep green background, and in the centre red spindle-back chairs with timber tables that can be joined or separated by party size — because a customer eating alone quickly and a group settling in to talk arrive at the same hour in a shop like this.
