집에서 가장 위험한 치수는 계단이 아니라 몇 센티미터의 단차입니다. 젊을 때는 인식조차 되지 않지만, 나이가 들수록 그 높이가 사고의 지점이 됩니다. 이 층의 설계는 그 높이를 없애는 데서 시작했습니다.

서울 강남구 논현동에 자리한 이 주택의 4층은 87㎡ 규모입니다. 2022년 2월 완공했습니다. 부모님 두 분이 생활하는 층입니다. 단차라는 기준에서 우리의 역할은 공간을 꾸미는 것이 아니라 바닥의 높이를 하나로 맞추는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 현관에서 거실, 방과 욕실까지 문턱을 모두 없애 걸려 넘어질 지점을 남기지 않았습니다. 부모님을 위한 주택 설계에서 가장 먼저 해결해야 하는 것은 마감의 취향이 아니라 이 높이입니다.

조명은 밝기보다 눈부심을 기준으로 잡았습니다. 나이가 들면 필요한 조도는 올라가는데 눈부심에는 더 예민해집니다. 광원이 직접 보이지 않도록 배치하고 확산되는 빛으로 전체 조도를 확보했습니다. 어둡지 않으면서 눈이 피로하지 않은 상태가 이 층의 기준이었습니다.

수납은 넉넉하게 짰습니다. 오래 사신 분들에게는 버리기 어려운 물건이 많습니다. 물건을 줄이라고 요구하는 대신 들어갈 자리를 먼저 만들었습니다. 수납이 부족한 집에서는 물건이 바닥으로 내려오고, 바닥에 놓인 물건은 그대로 걸림돌이 됩니다.

두 분이 쓰는 욕실에는 안전바를 설치했습니다. 젖은 바닥에서 몸을 지탱할 곳이 있는가 없는가는 큰 차이를 만듭니다. 위치는 실제로 앉고 일어서는 동작을 따라가며 정했습니다.

이 층은 주택이지만 아파트의 기능을 담아 설계했습니다. 단독주택은 층이 나뉘고 단차가 생기기 쉬운데, 아파트가 가진 평면의 단순함과 동선의 짧음은 나이 든 몸에 유리한 조건입니다. 형식은 주택으로 두고 기본기는 아파트에서 가져왔습니다.

When you are young it does not even register; as you age, that height becomes the point where accidents happen. The design of this floor began by removing it. The fourth floor of this house in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul is 87 sqm, completed by Bananafish in February 2022, and is the floor where the client parents live. Under the standard of level change, we placed our role not in decorating the space but in bringing every floor to a single height: thresholds were removed from entry to living room, bedrooms and bathroom, leaving no point to trip on. In designing a home for elderly parents, the first thing to resolve is not the taste of the finishes but this height. Lighting was set by glare rather than by brightness. With age the illumination required increases while sensitivity to glare also rises, so light sources were positioned out of direct view and overall levels achieved with diffused light. Bright enough, without tiring the eyes, was the standard for this floor. Storage was made generous. People who have lived a long time have many things that are hard to discard; rather than asking them to reduce their belongings, we made places for those belongings first. In a home short of storage, objects come down onto the floor, and objects on the floor become obstacles. Grab bars were installed in the parents bathroom, since whether there is something to hold on a wet floor makes a decisive difference; their positions were set by following the actual movements of sitting down and standing up. This floor is a house, but it was designed with the functions of an apartment. Detached houses divide into levels and accumulate level changes easily, whereas the simplicity of an apartment plan and the shortness of its circulation favour an ageing body. The form was left as a house; the fundamentals were borrowed from an apartment.
