의뢰 내용은 단순했습니다. 기존 강의실은 유지하고 확장부를 강의실로 만들며, 간단한 휴게 공간과 원장실을 통합한다. 마감 공사 중심의 일반적인 확장 프로젝트였습니다. 우리는 조금 다르게 보았습니다. 학원을 확장할 만큼 성장했다면 그 공간에는 아이들을 대하는 원장의 태도가 담겨야 한다고 생각했습니다.

경기 부천시 원미구에 자리한 칼란 영어학원은 133㎡ 규모의 학원입니다. 2019년 완공했습니다. 아지트라는 방향에서 우리의 역할은 강의실을 늘리는 것이 아니라 아이들의 자리를 하나 만드는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 학생 전용 짙은 녹색 메인 도어를 열고 들어가면 기존 강의동 A와 확장 강의동 B가 만나는 지점에 숨겨진 공간이 나타납니다. 간단히 간식을 먹을 수 있는 홈바, 혼자 집중할 수 있는 개인 학습 공간, 행사 규모에 맞게 재배치할 수 있는 모듈 소파로 구성했습니다. 단순한 휴게 공간이 아니라 학업 스트레스를 잠시 내려놓는 심리적 완충 공간입니다.

라운지 벽면을 살펴보면 문이 잘 보이지 않습니다. 벽의 일부처럼 숨긴 히든 도어에 오렌지색 포인트만 남겼습니다. 문을 찾는 일이 학원에 들어서는 작은 놀이가 되고, 아이들은 그 문을 자기들만 아는 통로처럼 씁니다.

공간의 중심을 잡는 것은 원장실입니다. 복도에서 내부가 훤히 들여다보이도록 전면을 투명 유리로 시공했습니다. 1:1 맞춤 수업과 학부모 상담, 강사 회의가 이곳에서 이뤄집니다. 아이들이 어떻게 공부하고 있는지 지켜보려는 원장의 목적도 있었지만, 결과적으로는 학부모에게 학원의 신뢰도를 보여주는 브랜딩 장치가 되었습니다.

학부모의 상담 동선은 건물 복도에서 바로 연결되는 원장실 출입문으로 분리했습니다. 상담의 독립성과 운영 효율을 높이는 동시에, 아이들의 자리를 온전히 보호하기 위한 설계입니다.

The brief was simple: keep the existing classrooms, turn the extension into classrooms, add a small lounge and integrate the director office. A conventional expansion project centred on finishes. We saw it slightly differently — if an academy has grown enough to expand, the space should carry the director attitude toward the children. [Hideout] : a place no adult assigned — a space children take for themselves and give a name to. Callan Institute is a 133 sqm academy in Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi, completed by Bananafish in 2019. Under the direction of a hideout, we placed our role not in adding classrooms but in making one place that belongs to the children. Through a deep green main door reserved for students, a hidden space appears at the point where the existing teaching wing A meets the extended wing B: a home bar for a quick snack, individual study places for concentrating alone, and modular sofas that can be rearranged to the size of an event. Not simply a lounge but a psychological buffer where academic stress can be set down for a while. Looking along the lounge wall, the doors are hard to find. Hidden doors are concealed as part of the wall with only an orange accent left visible, so that finding the door becomes a small game on entering, and the children use it as a passage only they know. The director office anchors the plan. Its front was built in clear glass so the interior is fully visible from the corridor; one-to-one lessons, parent consultations and teacher meetings all happen here. The director wanted to watch how the children were studying, but the result also works as a branding device that shows parents the reliability of the academy. The consultation route for parents was separated through a door to the director office connected directly from the building corridor — raising both the independence of consultations and operational efficiency, while keeping the children place fully protected.
