What narrows a shop first is not the wall but the floor. In a room filled by two or three people, anything placed on the floor takes that much away. In this shop we decided not to use the floor at all. [The floor] : the most expensive surface in a shop — the area that disappears the moment something is set on it. 2nd. K is an 11.8 sqm clothing store in Jung-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in August 2018. On the premise of emptying the floor, we placed our role in moving the display onto the walls. Rails were made from slim metal bars with member thickness reduced as far as possible, so that from a short distance only the garments appear to float. When the hardware does not take the eye first, the same number of pieces reads as more, and the character of the shop changes each time the clothes are changed. In a small shop, making the fixtures thin is not a matter of taste but of area. The walls are finished in textured plaster with lighting concealed near the ceiling, so the light grazes the surface and the plaster grain spreads like cloud — the only thing here that could be called decoration. Adding pattern or colour to a small room makes the room register before the goods, so the surface was made with light rather than with more material. The aisle side opens as clear glass in a slim frame: closing a small shop behind an opaque wall makes it look smaller than it is, so the view carries through to the back wall and the floor is kept close to the aisle in tone, allowing entry without a threshold.
