In a place that handles flowers, only the flowers need colour. Rather than deciding what to paint, we began by deciding what to remove; once walls and ceiling were lowered to a deep dark tone, the arrangements were the only saturated things in the room. [Background] : a surface that holds no colour of its own — the plane that steps back so that what stands in front of it can live. IN UN FIORE is a 41 sqm flower studio in Namdong-gu, Incheon, completed by Bananafish in December 2017. In the position of background, we placed our role not in lighting the room evenly but in deciding where to light. The ceiling carries only slim linear fixtures and the remaining light is gathered where flowers sit, leaving display bright and circulation dark; the difference in brightness decides where the eye goes. At the centre of the plan stands a glass room framed in slim brass, used for keeping flowers at their own temperature. Enclosing it in solid walls would have removed that area from view in a 41 sqm shop, whereas glass divides the temperature while letting sight pass straight through, making the box itself the largest display in the studio. All openings are cut with rounded tops: in a narrow, deep plan repeated rectangular doors make the route read as a corridor, while arches draw the eye inward at the same width and, repeated at the entrance, the glass room and the rear workroom, let 41 sqm read as several rooms rather than one. Materials were reduced to three — terrazzo flooring with fine aggregate, which does not show the water, soil and cut stems that constantly fall in this kind of work; black marble with broad white veining for the counter and worktable; and a vertically fluted gold surface behind the high table and stools at the rear, the one plane in the dark interior that catches light and works as a background.
