클라이언트는 회사 이름인 콜로라도를 분위기로 빌려 오는 것이 아니라 그 장소 자체로 표현하고 싶어 했습니다. 우리는 사무실을 꾸미는 대신 한 지역을 실내로 옮기기로 했습니다.

서울 강남구에 자리한 COLORADO는 130㎡ 규모의 광고 영상 후반 작업 스튜디오입니다. 2017년 9월 완공했습니다. 이름을 그대로 받아들인다는 전제에서 우리의 역할은 마감재를 고르는 것이 아니라 풍경을 짓는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 벽은 큰 석재 블록으로 쌓았습니다. 줄눈을 굵게 남기고 표면의 결을 살려, 매끈하게 마감한 사무실 벽이 아니라 협곡의 절개면처럼 보이게 했습니다. 바닥에는 마른 땅이 갈라진 무늬를 넣었습니다. 실내에서 바닥은 보통 가장 조용한 면인데, 여기서는 이 면이 풍경을 담당합니다.

그 위에 붉은 글씨로 COLORADO를 크게 얹었습니다. 벽 하나를 가득 채우는 크기이고, 사인이라기보다 길가에 오래 남아 바랜 글씨에 가깝습니다. 입구에는 주 경계에 서 있는 표지판의 문구를 그대로 옮겨 적었습니다. 사인을 회사 로고로만 쓰지 않고 여기가 어디인지 알려 주는 문장으로 쓴 것입니다.

마감재는 값싸고 거친 것을 골랐습니다. 문틀과 벽 일부를 구조용 합판 그대로 두고, 천장은 콘크리트와 배관을 노출한 뒤 트랙 조명만 걸었습니다. 다듬은 재료로 이 풍경을 만들면 세트처럼 보입니다. 손이 덜 간 재료여야 지어 놓은 것이 아니라 원래 그런 상태였던 것처럼 읽힙니다. 창가에는 긴 하이 테이블을 놓아 블라인드 사이로 들어오는 빛을 받게 했습니다.

이 모든 것과 정반대인 방이 안쪽에 있습니다. 색을 보정하는 방은 빛이 조금이라도 새어 들어와서는 안 됩니다. 벽과 천장을 어둡게 마감하고 흡음을 위한 타공 패널을 두른 뒤 모니터 외의 광원을 모두 없앴습니다. 밝고 건조한 바깥 풍경과 캄캄한 안쪽 방이 한 층에 함께 있고, 여기서 일하는 사람은 하루에도 몇 번씩 그 사이를 오갑니다. 130㎡ 안에 서로 다른 두 장소를 만드는 것이 이 설계의 목표였습니다.

The client did not want Colorado borrowed as an atmosphere but expressed as the place itself. Rather than decorating an office, we chose to bring a region indoors. [Name] : not an atmosphere borrowed but a place carried over — the word that lets a space say where it is. COLORADO is a 130 sqm post-production studio for advertising film in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in September 2017. On the premise of taking the name literally, we placed our role not in selecting finishes but in building a landscape. The walls were built up in large blocks of stone, with wide joints and the grain of the surface left visible, so that they read as the cut face of a canyon rather than as a smoothly finished office wall. The floor carries the pattern of cracked, dried earth: indoors the floor is usually the quietest surface, but here it is the one that carries the landscape. Over that, COLORADO is set in large red letters filling an entire wall — less a sign than lettering left on a roadside long enough to fade. At the entrance, the wording from the sign that stands at the state line was reproduced exactly, so that the graphics work not only as a company logo but as a sentence telling you where you are. Finishes were chosen cheap and rough: door frames and parts of the walls left as bare structural plywood, the ceiling stripped to concrete and services with only track lighting hung beneath. Built from refined materials this landscape would look like a set; only less worked materials let the interior read as a found condition rather than a constructed one. A long high table sits at the window to catch the light coming through the blinds. Inside all of this is a room that is its exact opposite. A grading room must not admit even a trace of stray light, so its walls and ceiling are finished dark, wrapped in perforated acoustic panel, and every light source other than the monitors removed. A bright, dry landscape and a completely dark room share one floor, and the people who work here cross between them several times a day. Making two different places within 130 sqm was the aim of the design.
