재료가 바뀌는 자리마다 선이 하나씩 생깁니다. 14㎡에서는 그 선이 곧 벽처럼 작동합니다. 우리는 마감을 고르는 대신 선의 개수를 세는 데서 시작했습니다.

서울 중구에 자리한 FIND.J는 14㎡ 규모의 의류 매장입니다. 2017년 2월 완공했습니다. 선을 줄인다는 전제에서 우리의 역할은 재료를 고르는 것이 아니라 같은 재료를 어디까지 끌고 갈지 정하는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 벽과 카운터를 같은 돌로 마감했습니다. 굵은 알갱이가 박힌 회갈색 석재를 큰 판으로 붙이고 카운터도 같은 판으로 감쌌습니다. 카운터가 따로 놓인 가구가 아니라 벽이 접혀 나온 것처럼 읽히기 때문에, 좁은 매장 안에서 덩어리 하나가 시야에서 사라집니다.

사인은 따로 만들지 않고 돌 위에 직접 새겼습니다. 간판을 덧붙이면 그만큼 면이 두꺼워지고 조명이 하나 더 필요합니다. 글자를 파 넣으면 위쪽에서 내려오는 빛이 지날 때 음영으로만 드러나서, 앞에 선 사람에게는 분명하고 멀리서는 벽면을 흐트러뜨리지 않습니다.

행거는 가는 황동 봉으로 짜서 벽에 걸거나 바닥에 세웠습니다. 옷걸이까지 같은 색으로 맞추면 걸린 옷 위로 금색 선이 한 줄 지나갑니다. 무채색 돌과 밝은 바닥 사이에서 이 선 하나가 진열의 높이를 정하고, 옷을 바꿔 걸어도 매장의 기준선은 그대로 남습니다.

돌은 눈높이 아래까지만 올리고 그 위는 흰 면으로 비운 뒤 천장 가까이에 간접 조명을 넣었습니다. 손과 옷이 닿는 높이만 단단한 재료로 감싸고, 나머지는 빛을 받는 면으로 남긴 것입니다. 바닥은 흰 알갱이가 굵게 박힌 밝은 테라조로 깔았습니다. 아래가 밝으면 층고가 넉넉하지 않은 매장에서도 실내가 눌려 보이지 않습니다.

Wherever a material changes, a line appears. At 14 sqm that line works like a wall. Rather than choosing finishes, we began by counting the lines. [The edge] : the place where one material becomes another — the line that divides the room once more each time it is added. FIND.J is a 14 sqm clothing store in Jung-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in February 2017. On the premise of reducing lines, we placed our role not in choosing materials but in deciding how far one material could be carried. Walls and counter are finished in the same stone — a grey-brown aggregate laid in large panels, with the counter wrapped in the same panels — so the counter reads not as a separate piece of furniture but as the wall folded outward, removing one mass from view in a small room. No signboard was made; the name is cut directly into the stone. An applied sign would thicken the surface and require another light fitting, whereas incised letters appear only as shadow when light passes down the wall — clear to someone standing in front of it, and not disturbing the surface from a distance. Rails are slim brass bars, wall-hung and freestanding, with hangers matched in the same tone so that a single gold line runs above the garments; between the neutral stone and the pale floor that one line sets the height of the display, and it remains as the constant of the shop however the clothes are changed. The stone rises only to eye level, above which the wall is left white with indirect light concealed near the ceiling — hard material only where hands and garments reach, and a light-catching plane above. The floor is pale terrazzo with coarse white aggregate; keeping the lower half bright prevents a shop without generous ceiling height from feeling pressed down.
