Holding classes at home is not a question of making two spaces. It is a question of one place being used differently at different times. Build a wall for a separate classroom and it stands unused more than half the time; do nothing at all and the house must be cleared before every class. [Overlap] : dividing time rather than adding rooms — the sequence by which one surface is a dining table and then a worktop. Raemian East Palace in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi is a 172 sqm apartment, completed by Bananafish in December 2016. Only the kitchen and living room were reworked, not the whole home. The client teaches cooking and flowers together, and on class days guests come to the house, make things together and share the food as a dinner. Under the order of overlap, we placed our role not in adding rooms but in giving one place several uses. The structure was therefore left as found and only the uses multiplied: existing walls, windows and room layout were untouched. The plan of a 172 sqm apartment is already a proven arrangement; the problem lay not in the plan but in what sat inside it. What changed was the working surface in the kitchen, the furniture in the living room, and where things are kept. The kitchen island was made large. As a surface that must serve as worktop, demonstration counter and serving table at once, it was sized not for one person but for several standing around it. Base units were pressed down in a dark tone so the island reads as a single mass, with the countertop left bright in white — a background was needed against which ingredients show their colour accurately. In the living room a long timber table was placed with steel-framed open shelving on the wall behind it. Bowls, vases and tools were left on the shelves rather than hidden behind doors: the time taken to fetch what a class needs is preparation time, and things kept in view explain by themselves what this home does. On weekday evenings it is the table where a family eats; on class days it is the worktop several people stand around; when the class ends it becomes the table where the plates arrive. Overlapping a home and a workplace within one plan turned out to be a matter of dividing the day rather than dividing the area.
