Clothing, tableware, bedding and cosmetics are sold in one place. Lined up on shelves they become a list of unrelated things. Rather than building a shop, we chose to bring a whole house over — the home of someone who loves well-judged clothing, so that one side shows the sensibility of the Lemite brand while the other works as a lifestyle store. [House] : a place where objects are not displayed but in use — where you see the scene before you buy the thing. Lemite is a 112.7 sqm lifestyle store in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi, completed by Bananafish in March 2016. On the premise of moving a house over, we placed our role not in dividing product categories but in dividing rooms: a kitchen with a dining table, a bedroom with a bed, a desk with wall storage, a washing and cosmetics area, with the products placed inside them. Plates are already set on the table and bedding already made on the bed; the table, the bedding and the tableware are all for sale, but because none of them sit on a display fixture, a customer sees the scene in which an object is used before choosing it. Since a house was brought over, its rooms are used as they are: the shower room and bathroom serve as the fitting rooms. No separate booth was built into the shop, so trying on clothes is not an added retail procedure but the same act as trying something on at home — which is why the patterned cement tile floor, the pink-painted walls and the real doors were all left in place. The rooms are divided by floor rather than by wall: mint tile in the kitchen, pale herringbone timber through living and bedroom, cement tile in the washing area. When the floor changes, one reads as having entered another room without any door; dividing 112.7 sqm with real walls would have narrowed each room and darkened the rear. Where a plane was still needed, white-framed glazed partitions with grid mullions separate the zones while letting light and sight pass. Outside, the ground floor of the red brick building was left as found and fitted with black and white striped awnings and two large display windows, in which scenes rather than products are arranged; for someone passing on the street, that is what explains the shop, not the sign.
