The people who come here are already known. It receives not passing visitors but the same clients and the same editors, over and over. A space like that does not need to explain itself. [Handle] : the device that announces there is a door — the first thing to disappear when there is nothing to announce. C.I.C is a 302 sqm post-production studio for advertising film in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, completed by Bananafish in October 2015. On the premise of removing handles, we placed our role not in designing doors but in returning doors to walls. From the entrance onward every door is finished flush with the wall, leaving only a fine joint; a first-time visitor cannot tell where the door is, while someone who comes often simply pushes it. This is a place for the people who come often. Once inside, one long wall comes into view, clad continuously in super mirror stainless steel with a slim line of light running along the ceiling beside it. The reflections slip out of register as you walk, so the whole wall reads as a single strip of film running past — for a company that works with moving images, the most accurate thing to put on that wall was not a picture but this movement. The colorists rooms are hidden within that surface. Each reads as a section of wall rather than as a door, and unless one is open there is no indication of how many there are. A grading room must not admit stray light, so it needs neither window nor marking in any case; rooms that had to be closed for functional reasons were turned into rooms that are more natural for being concealed. In place of what was hidden, something to look for was added: walking the corridor you find yourself reading which panel opens, and each room is glazed in a different colour so that when a door opens that colour spreads into the corridor. Who is in which room is announced by light rather than by a nameplate — in a place where people shut themselves into a room for hours at a time, the corridor becomes the thing that tells you the others are there. The lobby was left open by contrast: the ceiling wrapped in timber and folded inward, the reception desk built as a single mass faceted several times, and the waiting area floored in large black and white triangles. The corridor is dark and quiet, so the lobby has to be bright and angular — that way going further in registers as a change.
