넓은 아파트에서 흔히 생기는 문제는 벽이 늘어난다는 것입니다. 방을 나누고 수납을 만들려면 벽을 세워야 하고, 벽이 늘어날수록 복도가 길어집니다. 194㎡에서 복도는 실제로 상당한 면적을 차지하지만 이름이 붙은 방은 아닙니다.

서울 강남구에 자리한 동양 파라곤은 194㎡ 규모의 아파트입니다. 2015년 2월 완공했습니다. 기준점이라는 조건에서 우리의 역할은 벽을 더 세우는 것이 아니라 재료로 성격을 가르는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 바닥과 벽의 배경은 밝은 베이지 석재로 통일했습니다. 큰 판으로 이어 붙여 이음선을 줄이고, 현관과 복도, 거실까지 같은 재료로 연결했습니다. 배경이 하나로 이어지면 방이 나뉘어 있어도 집은 한 덩어리로 읽힙니다.

그 배경 위에 짙은 목재로 감싼 덩어리를 세웠습니다. 벽처럼 붙어 있지 않고 평면 안에 서 있는 볼륨이고, 안쪽에는 주방이 들어갑니다. 밝은 석재 사이에서 이 목재 면만 어둡기 때문에, 복도를 걸으면 이 덩어리를 기준으로 지금 어디쯤인지 알 수 있습니다. 넓은 평면에서 방향을 잡아 주는 것은 사인이 아니라 이런 기준점입니다.

주방과 거실 사이는 흑색 프레임에 색이 들어간 유리를 끼운 슬라이딩 도어로 나눴습니다. 열면 거실과 하나로 이어지고, 닫으면 조리하는 모습과 소리가 걸러집니다. 완전히 트인 주방은 손님이 있을 때 부담이 되고, 완전히 막힌 주방은 혼자 쓸 때 답답합니다. 투명 유리가 아니라 색이 있는 유리를 쓴 것은 닫았을 때 안쪽이 그대로 드러나지 않게 하기 위해서입니다.

목재 볼륨의 모서리는 직각으로 두지 않고 사선으로 접었습니다. 복도가 꺾이는 지점에서 각진 모서리는 시야를 끊고 통행 폭을 좁힙니다. 면을 접으면 같은 폭에서도 지나가기가 편하고, 걸어오는 동안 안쪽 공간이 조금 먼저 보입니다.

거실은 가구를 낮게 두고 벽면을 비웠습니다. 넓은 거실에서 높은 가구를 놓으면 오히려 면적이 잘게 나뉩니다. 대형 평형 아파트 인테리어에서 실제로 필요한 것은 채우는 일이 아니라, 어디를 기준으로 삼을지 하나만 분명하게 정하는 일이었습니다.

The recurring problem in a large apartment is that walls multiply. Dividing rooms and building storage both require them, and every additional wall lengthens the corridor — which in 194 sqm takes up considerable area without ever becoming a named room. Dong-yang Paragon in Gangnam-gu, Seoul is a 194 sqm apartment, completed by Bananafish in February 2015. Under the condition of a reference point, we placed our role not in adding walls but in separating character by material. Floors and background walls are unified in pale beige stone laid in large panels with minimal joints, carried continuously through entry, corridor and living room, so that the apartment reads as one volume even where rooms are separated. Standing within that background is a mass wrapped in dark timber, not attached as a wall but freestanding in the plan and containing the kitchen; because it is the only dark surface among the pale stone, walking the corridor you can tell where you are by reference to it. What orients you in a large plan is not signage but a marker of this kind. Between kitchen and living room, a sliding door of tinted glass in a black frame divides the two: opened, the kitchen joins the living room; closed, the sight and sound of cooking are filtered. A fully open kitchen becomes a burden when guests are present, while a fully closed one feels confined when used alone, and tinted rather than clear glass was chosen so the interior is not fully exposed when the door is shut. The corners of the timber volume were folded on a diagonal rather than left square. At a turn in the corridor a sharp corner cuts the line of sight and narrows the passage; folding the surface makes the same width easier to pass and lets the space beyond appear slightly earlier as you approach. In the living room, furniture was kept low and the walls left empty — tall furniture in a large living room divides the area into smaller pieces rather than filling it. What a large apartment interior actually required was not filling but deciding clearly on one thing to measure everything else against.
