이 집에는 사람 한 명과 고양이 여러 마리가 함께 삽니다. 그러면 재료를 고르는 기준이 달라집니다. 눈으로 보기 좋은가가 아니라, 하루에도 몇 번씩 뛰어내리는 몸에 무리가 없는가가 먼저입니다.

재료를 고르는 기준이 바뀌는 자리

서울 강남구 논현동에 자리한 이 주택의 5층은 100㎡ 규모입니다. 2022년 2월 완공했습니다. 클라이언트가 고양이들과 함께 생활하는 층입니다. 관절이라는 기준에서 우리의 역할은 마감재를 고르는 것이 아니라 딱딱한 재료를 빼는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 이 집에 석재는 한 곳도 쓰지 않았습니다. 반려묘와 함께 사는 집에서 돌은 시각적으로는 좋지만 뛰어내리는 동물의 관절에는 그대로 충격이 됩니다.

위층으로 올라가는 계단 바닥은 초록색 카펫으로 마감했습니다. 발이 미끄러지지 않고 착지할 때 충격이 흡수됩니다. 색을 초록으로 고른 것은 오프화이트로 정리한 벽과 천장 사이에서 계단이 하나의 길처럼 읽히게 하기 위해서입니다. 고양이는 사람보다 먼저 이 길을 씁니다.

천장 아래에는 다락을 만들었습니다. 사람이 서서 쓰기에는 낮지만 고양이에게는 충분한 높이입니다. 난간 대신 금속 망을 써서 아래층에서 위가 보이고 위에서 아래가 보이게 했습니다. 같은 집에 살면서 서로 다른 높이에 있는 시간이 길기 때문에, 서로를 볼 수 있는 것이 이 집에서는 중요한 조건이었습니다.

벽과 천장은 오프화이트 친환경 도장으로 마감했습니다. 사람보다 바닥에 가까이 있고 몸을 자주 핥는 동물이 함께 사는 집에서 도료의 성분은 취향의 문제가 아닙니다. 색을 흰색이 아니라 오프화이트로 잡은 것은 반사가 강하면 동물의 눈이 피로해지기 때문입니다.

반려동물과 함께 사는 집을 설계할 때 가장 자주 놓치는 것은 재료의 경도입니다. 미끄럼과 충격, 성분과 반사. 사람에게는 사소해 보이지만 매일 뛰어오르고 내려앉는 몸에는 그것이 전부입니다.

One person and several cats live in this home. That changes the criteria for choosing materials: not whether a surface looks good, but whether it is kind to a body that jumps down from height several times a day. The fifth floor of this house in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul is 100 sqm, completed by Bananafish in February 2022, and is the floor where the client lives with the cats. Under the standard of joints, we placed our role not in selecting finishes but in removing hard ones: no stone was used anywhere in this house. In a home shared with cats, stone looks well but transmits the full impact of every landing. The stair to the loft is finished in green carpet, so feet do not slip and impact is absorbed on landing; green was chosen so that between the off-white walls and ceiling the stair reads as a path — and the cats use that path before anyone else does. A loft was made beneath the ceiling, too low for an adult to stand in but ample for a cat, with metal mesh in place of a balustrade so that the level below is visible from above and the level above from below. In a house where the occupants spend long stretches at different heights, being able to see one another was an essential condition. Walls and ceilings are finished in off-white low-emission paint; in a home shared with an animal that lives closer to the floor and grooms itself constantly, the composition of the paint is not a matter of taste. Off-white rather than pure white was chosen because strong reflection tires an animal eyes. What is most often overlooked when designing a home for people living with pets is the hardness of the materials — slip, impact, composition, reflection. These seem minor to a person, but to a body that jumps up and lands every day they are everything.
