Giving each floor a distinct character is not difficult. What is difficult is making people move between them often. If going up and down is tiresome, only one floor ends up in use, and however well a hobby room is made, a floor no one descends to becomes a store. [Stair] : not a passage joining floors but the structure that makes floors get used. This house in Samseong-ri, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi is a 227 sqm detached house, completed by Bananafish in July 2020 as a second home used at weekends and holidays rather than daily. It occupies three levels of distinctly different use: a semi-basement hobby floor with music, billiards and a light home bar; a ground floor with a living room looking onto Lake Paldang and a guest room for family or friends staying over; and an upper floor given entirely to the couple bedroom and bathroom. The existing stair — its width, direction and landing position — made moving between floors tiresome, so the structure of the stair was rebuilt before any finish was decided. Rebuilding it resolved the relationship of the three levels: the direction of travel and the position of the landing were changed so that the first scene on arriving at each floor matches that floor character, and openings were cut in the stairwell wall so light and sight cross between levels. Treads are oak, walls kept light, and the handrail formed in copper — a material chosen to deepen in colour over time, since hands touch it several times a day. The ground floor was organised around the window. With Lake Paldang spreading in front of the building, the greatest asset here is neither the flooring nor the furniture but that view; the quieter the interior, the sharper the water. Floors are laid in large-format white stone and walls finished light so that nothing catches the eye. The kitchen shares one volume with the living room but is separated by colour: base units and island pressed down in a dark tone to sit low on the pale floor, with upper surfaces matched to the wall so the cooking zone does not occupy the view. Placing the guest room and bathroom on the ground floor was the decision that set the character of this house — someone staying the night never passes through the bedroom floor, and the couple territory remains intact above. The more often a house receives people, the less the guest route should overlap with the owners. On the upper floor, corridor and doors were pressed low in dark timber to sit darker than the level below, with the bathroom finished in dark stone and glass; setting different brightness for the floor guests use and the floor only two people use means the day settles while climbing the stair. The lower level is not fully buried but semi-basement, with windows on one side admitting daylight. The main reason a basement hobby room feels like a store is not darkness but the loss of any sense of time; once even a little outside light enters, you can tell whether it is afternoon or evening, and from that point the level reads as a room rather than a basement. Rather than raising overall brightness, the lighting was dropped locally to create the density suited to listening to music, playing billiards and having a drink.
