비가 내리면 창밖의 풍경은 사라지지 않고 흐려집니다. 우리는 이 흐려짐을 실내에 만들 수 있다면 90.2㎡를 벽으로 나누지 않고도 자리와 자리를 떼어 놓을 수 있다고 보았습니다.

전남 여수 덕충안길에 자리한 RAIN BLUR는 90.2㎡ 규모의 카페입니다. 2021년 9월 설계했습니다. 흐림이라는 이름에서 우리의 역할은 칸을 나누는 것이 아니라 한 겹을 세우는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 공간 한가운데에 가는 금속 체인을 천장에서 바닥까지 늘어뜨린 면을 세웠습니다. 벽이 아니라 비입니다. 사람이 지나가면 갈라졌다가 다시 모이고, 뒤쪽에 앉은 사람과 카운터의 움직임이 완전히 가려지지도 완전히 드러나지도 않습니다. 카페에서 옆자리와의 거리는 실제 치수보다 시선의 문제인데, 이 면 하나가 그 거리를 만듭니다.

로고는 이 체인 면 위에 얹었습니다. 정면에서 보면 RAIN BLUR라는 글자가 또렷하고, 각도가 조금만 틀어지면 체인의 열이 어긋나면서 글자도 함께 흐려집니다. 사인을 벽에 붙이지 않고 움직이는 면 위에 올려 두었기 때문에, 이름이 곧 이 공간에서 일어나는 현상을 설명합니다.

나머지 재료는 모두 낮췄습니다. 벽은 짙은 녹회색 거친 미장으로 마감하고 바닥은 밝은 회색 모르타르로 깔았으며, 천장은 자갈을 붙인 것처럼 거칠게 두었습니다. 광택을 가진 것은 체인뿐이라서 조명이 지날 때 이 면만 반짝입니다. 좌석은 검정 라운지 체어로 통일하고 등받이를 낮게 두어, 앉은 사람의 시야가 체인 너머까지 이어지게 했습니다.

창은 크게 남겼습니다. 여수의 하늘과 바다는 하루 동안 색을 여러 번 바꾸는데, 실내를 어둡게 유지하면 그 색이 창을 통해 들어와 체인에 걸립니다. 해가 낮게 걸릴 때는 금속이 주황으로 물들고 흐린 날에는 회색으로 가라앉습니다. 실내에 색을 쓰지 않은 것은 바깥의 색을 쓰기 위해서입니다.

RAIN BLUR is a 90.2 sqm cafe on Deokchungan-gil in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, designed by Bananafish in September 2021. Under the name of blur, we placed our role not in dividing the room into compartments but in raising a single layer. A plane of fine metal chain was hung from ceiling to floor through the middle of the space — not a wall but rain. It parts as someone passes and closes again, and the people seated behind it and the movement at the counter are neither fully hidden nor fully visible; distance between tables in a cafe is a matter of sight rather than dimension, and this one plane creates it. The logo sits on the chain itself: seen straight on the words RAIN BLUR read clearly, and at the slightest change of angle the rows of chain shift out of alignment and the letters blur with them. Because the sign is carried on a moving surface rather than fixed to a wall, the name describes what actually happens in the room. Everything else was kept low: walls in coarse dark green-grey plaster, floor in pale grey mortar, ceiling left rough as though set with gravel. The chain is the only thing with any sheen, so it is the only surface that catches light. Seating is unified in black lounge chairs with low backs, so that a seated view continues past the chain. The windows were kept large. The sky and sea in Yeosu change colour several times a day, and keeping the interior dark lets that colour come in and catch on the chain — metal turning orange when the sun sits low, settling to grey on overcast days. No colour was used inside precisely so that the colour outside could be used instead.
