서울 강남구에 자리한 강남 청담미의원은 140㎡ 규모의 의원이다. 2019년 5월 문을 열었다. 이 프로젝트의 설계는 밝기를 낮추는 데서 시작했다.

병원 인테리어의 기본값은 밝음이다. 흰 벽, 밝은 바닥, 충분한 조도. 깨끗해 보이고 위생적으로 읽히기 때문이다. 이 프로젝트에서는 그 기본값을 따르지 않았다. 청담이라는 자리에서 이 의원을 찾는 사람은 자신의 방문이 눈에 띄지 않기를 바란다. 밝은 공간은 사람을 드러내고, 낮은 조도는 사람을 가린다.

벽 전체를 결이 큰 트래버틴으로 마감했다. 베이지 계열의 석재는 백색 도장보다 반사가 적고, 표면의 결과 공극이 빛을 흡수한다. 조도를 낮춰도 공간이 어두침침해지지 않는 이유는 재료가 빛을 머금기 때문이다.

리셉션 카운터와 그 뒤 벽은 흑색 대리석으로 짰다. 베이지 석재로 정리한 공간에서 이 면만 어둡다. 밝은 오브제로 시선을 끄는 방식의 반대다. 어두운 면이 배경 속에서 먼저 눈에 들어오고, 그 위에 백색 입체 사인으로 병원 이름을 얹었다.

복도와 진료실 문은 짙은 갈색 목재로 통일했다. 문틀과 문, 벽 하부를 같은 톤으로 맞춰 문이 도드라지지 않게 했다. 어느 방으로 들어가는지 복도에서 읽히지 않는 편이 이 병원에서는 낫다고 봤다.

복도가 꺾이는 코너에는 세로 목재 루버를 곡면으로 세웠다. 각진 모서리를 없애면서 동시에 시선이 안쪽으로 바로 뚫리지 않게 하는 장치다. 140㎡에서 루버 한 겹은 벽 한 장보다 얇으면서 벽만큼 가린다.

벽면 곳곳에는 조명이 들어간 니치를 팠다. 안내문과 액자를 벽에 붙이는 대신 파낸 자리에 넣는다. 조도가 낮은 공간에서 니치는 그 자체로 밝은 점이 되어 복도의 리듬을 만든다.

상담실과 처치실은 창을 살리고 벽을 밝은 톤으로 바꿨다. 복도는 어둡게, 실제로 머무는 방은 밝게. 들어오고 나가는 길에서는 가려지고, 앉아서 상담하는 자리에서는 상대의 얼굴이 잘 보이게 했다.

Gangnam Chungdam Me Clinic is a 140 sqm clinic in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, designed by Bananafish and opened in May 2019. The project began by lowering the light level. Clinics default to brightness — white walls, pale floors, high illuminance — because it reads as clean, but a patient visiting this kind of practice in Cheongdam would rather their visit not be conspicuous, and bright rooms expose people while low light conceals them. Walls are clad in heavily veined travertine, which absorbs light through its open grain so that the reduced illuminance never reads as gloom. Reception and the wall behind it are cut from black marble, the only dark surface in a beige interior, drawing the eye by contrast rather than by brightness, with the clinic name set on it in raised white lettering. Doors, frames and dado are matched in dark brown timber so that no door announces which room a patient enters, curved vertical timber louvres soften the corridor corners while blocking the sightline into the rooms beyond, and lit niches cut into the walls replace posted notices.
