540㎡를 한 층에 펼칠 수는 없습니다. 여러 층으로 나뉜 집에서 흔한 실수는 모든 층을 같은 톤으로 맞추는 것입니다. 통일감은 생기지만 층을 오르내릴 이유가 사라집니다.

경기 파주시에 자리한 헤르만하우스는 540㎡ 규모의 단독주택입니다. 2022년 6월 완공했습니다. 층이라는 조건에서 우리의 역할은 마감을 통일하는 것이 아니라 층마다 다른 성격을 부여하는 데 있도록 두었습니다. 위층은 밝게, 아래층은 어둡게 잡았습니다. 계단은 두 성격을 잇는 장치가 됩니다. 대형 단독주택 설계에서 층을 나누는 기준은 면적이 아니라 그 층에서 무엇을 하는가입니다.

거실이 있는 층은 창을 중심으로 짰습니다. 한 면 전체를 유리로 열어 파주의 숲이 그대로 들어오게 하고, 나머지 마감은 베이지 계열 석재와 아이보리로 눌렀습니다. 창밖이 계절마다 바뀌는 집에서는 실내가 조용할수록 바깥이 선명해집니다.

거실 벽 하나에만 다른 밀도를 줬습니다. 삼각형 입체 패널을 친환경 패브릭 소재로 벽면 전체에 붙이고 모서리마다 빛을 흘려, 시간에 따라 음영이 계속 달라지도록 했습니다. 넓은 거실에서 평평한 벽은 공간을 비어 보이게 만듭니다. 면에 굴곡을 주면 가구를 늘리지 않고도 밀도가 생깁니다.

주방과 다이닝은 벽을 두지 않고 하나로 이었습니다. 백색 아일랜드에 결이 큰 대리석 상판을 얹고, 주방 가전은 전부 같은 색 수납장 안으로 감췄습니다. 다이닝 테이블은 숲이 보이는 창 앞에 놓았습니다. 이 집에서 사람이 가장 오래 머무는 자리입니다.

한실은 붙박이장 문을 캔버스로 썼습니다. 백색 격자 도어에 매화와 새를 그린 한국화를 넣어, 문을 닫으면 벽이 한 폭의 그림이 되고 열면 수납장이 됩니다. 손님방이자 수납 공간인 방에서, 쓰지 않는 시간이 더 길다는 점을 감안한 선택이었습니다.

지하로 내려가면 톤이 완전히 바뀝니다. 짙은 우드로 벽과 천장을 감싸고 조도를 낮췄습니다. 홈시어터와 노래방, 가벼운 음료 바가 이 층에 있습니다. 위층이 낮과 손님의 공간이라면 이 층은 밤과 가족의 공간입니다. 어두운 재료는 이 층을 위층의 연장이 아니라 다른 집처럼 느끼게 합니다.

540 sqm cannot be laid out on a single level. The common mistake in a house divided across floors is matching every floor in the same tone; unity appears, but the reason to move between floors disappears. Hermann House in Paju-si, Gyeonggi is a 540 sqm detached house, completed by Bananafish in June 2022. Under the condition of floors, we placed our role not in unifying the finishes but in giving each level its own character: bright above, dark below, with the stair as the device that joins the two. In designing a large house, floors are divided not by area but by what happens on them. The living-room level was composed around the window, one full face opened in glass so the Paju forest enters directly, with the remaining finishes held down in beige stone and ivory. In a house where the view changes each season, the quieter the interior, the sharper the outside. Only one living-room wall was given a different density: triangular three-dimensional panels in an eco-friendly fabric cover the entire surface with light released along each edge, so the shadows shift continuously through the day. In a large living room a flat wall makes the space read as empty; giving the surface relief creates density without adding furniture. Kitchen and dining were joined without a dividing wall, a white island topped in heavily veined marble with all appliances concealed in cabinetry of the same colour, and the dining table placed before the window onto the forest — the place where people stay longest in this house. In the Korean-style room the built-in wardrobe doors were used as a canvas: white grid doors inset with a Korean painting of plum blossom and birds, so that closed the wall becomes a single picture and open it becomes storage — a choice made because a guest and storage room stands unused for longer than it is used. Downstairs the tone changes completely, walls and ceiling wrapped in dark timber with the light level lowered, holding a home theatre, a karaoke room and a light drinks bar. If the upper floors belong to daylight and to guests, this one belongs to night and to the family; the dark materials make it feel not like an extension of the floor above but like a different house.
